As the 19th c. was fading away Europe witnessed rising of a new and very popular style of Art Nouveau referred to as Modernist style in Georgia. The new trend started to gain popularity in Georgia right from its appearance and many buildings that have now been recognized as certain landmarks in our city were built following its artistic features. Modernistic forms in Tbilisi acquired an original shape and character and are now part of world heritage. The modernistic buildings presented throughout this route have largely contributed to the unique character of Tbilisi as a European city.
One of the most outstanding art-nouveau buildings in Tbilisi is located on 3, Leonidze Street. Architect of this building is M.Oghanjanov. This building was built in 1910 and is used as National Bank of Georgia. The building has two floors, is white and has huge windows. When I saw it for the first time I was thrilled, because of its grandeur, and its huge art nouveau styled windows. But unfortunately not many Georgians know about this amazing building in their hometown Tbilisi.

There are many buildings of Art Nouveau style in Tbilisi Georgia but I have chosen my absolute favorite to present to you today. Its address is 3 Giorgi Leonidze St. and it was built in the early 1870s. It was originally not Art Nouveau but in 1903 it was changed to Art Nouveau style. This building was the former Tbilisi Municipal Credit Society but now is just for show. It has very intricate designs that must have been very hard to come by in its time. It has stain glass circular windows on the roof and a marble stall with a wrought iron Art Nouveau designed gate around it. It has very detailed pillars all over that I think are Corinthian but may be Ionic. I encourage you to visit this building and marvel at its great beauty and elegance. The architect‘s name is M.Ohajanov and everybody should learn this name so that they can give him praise for his ingenious creativity and design. As I said earlier please take your time to visit this building so that you too may see its absolute beauty.

"We should take it into consideration that Georgian professional specialists and
craftsman enriched international Art Nouveau by adding national and traditional
elements. There are wooden balconies hanging on the back elevations of the apartment
houses – best sample of the coexistence of European and traditional and interesting
feature of the Georgian Art Nouveau” (citation from:)

All though all the many buildings, my favorite one is the former glove atelier. It is located in Giorgi Leonidze St. and its architect is unknown. By how it looks you can see it was created in the early 1900; 1902 to be exact. it was built in the great art nouveau period.

Out of a hole lot of different choices of Art Nouveau Buildings I chose to do this one because it has the most complicated design. This building is an apartment house, the author of reconstruction is Architect Simon Kldiashvili, this building was built in 1902 and it is ON 4 Vardtsikhe St. in Tbilisi. It’s an apartment house it belonged to G. Kartvelishvili.

Tbilisi has a valuable Art Nouveau heritage. At the beginning of the 20th century, during the Art Nouveau era, politics in Georgia were directly controlled by the capital of the Empire, Saint Petersburg, and Russian influence was evident. Despite all this, Tbilisi’s privileged location by the Black Sea, between Europe and Asia – that is, a city-bridge between two continents – helped to bring Art Nouveau inspired architecture, an unquestionable image of internationalism and modernity that was called “Modern Style” in Georgia.
Moreover, this will to be modern determined that new materials and building techniques would be introduced with new forms, such as wrought iron and cement. At the same time, however, Art Nouveau in Georgia incorporated many local elements and was not a simple copy of European models.
The new style was widespread. Most of the buildings are residential blocks, but there are also public buildings, such as schools, banks, hospitals, industrial buildings, small shops, entertainment centres, theatres and a cinema: the Apollo. On the other hand, it is also worth emphasising the great widespread social use of the applied and decorative arts, furniture, wrought iron work and decorative painting, etc.
The architect that best represents the movement is Simon Kldiashvili, who was trained in Russia and for whom documentation exists linking him to various works. It is also worth mentioning the large mansions built by prestigious industrialists like David Sarajishvili, a producer of cognac, or the trader Alexander Chavchanidze. But the designers of these works are unknown.

My favourite building in Tbilisi is a former house of Caucasian officers Economical society, now “TBC Bank”, located: 7 Marjanishvili street, architect A.Rogoiski, 1912.

“Historical Background
Even before Tbilisi Central Department Store took up occupancy in this building, it housed the Economic Association of Officers of the Caucasus. The association announced a tender for the conceptual design project of the building. The tender conditions were published in the Almanac of the Saint Petersburg Architectural Association. The building was constructed following the design of the prominent architect Alexander Rogoisky, who at the time resided in Tbilisi. According to one of the versions the actual construction of this building is also related with the name of a well-known Italian architect Angelo Andreoletti who owned a stone cutting and polishing factory in Tbilisi, where Italian craftsmen dressed imported Italian marble. On June 30 of 1913 the grand opening of the building took place.”

The third building of national library was built by the project of Michel Ohanjanov and R. Golenishev in 1910. In the past it was the bank. It is one of the best among public buildings built in modern style in Tbilisi. If we look at the interior, ornaments, columns, architecture elements and roof we can truly say that it is built in modern style. This beautiful round building with stone balcony is located on Purceladze and Gudiashvili crossroads.
Michel Ohanjanov projects are known since 1898.From this period up to the First World War he designed many apartment and public houses. Mainly he was making modern style projects such as Marjanishvili theatre and Ministry of Finance. Alojan and Ohanjanov were making the project of Ministry of Finance together. For a long time Ohanjanov worked in Tbilisi urban governance as a district architect.
Our class went to trip to see this building (National Parliament Library). It was very beautiful. I liked that it is not dark and small I liked colors, contrast and shapes of ornaments.
